Our home

As men, we’re taught to protect our home,

From danger and all manners of evil.

But in the process, we shut out the world,

Drawing a circle in the sand.

We buy guns and expensive security systems,

With cameras facing every which way,

All because we don’t love our neighbors

As much as we love our wealth.

Can it be the enemy wears sheep’s clothing,

Blowing down our sanctity with the winds of greed?

A double agent behind friendly lines,

Donning a smile, a suit, and the promise of good deed.

This enemy is impervious to our attempts

To rid him with weapons and barbed wire fences.

Its cunning lies in exploiting our fear,

Our arrogance and shame it can easily reveal.

The corporate machine, fueled by our need,

Devours the earth with ruthless speed.

We’ve prioritized profits and quick returns,

Trading short-term gains for long-term pains.

If we are to protect our home,

There are changes we must employ:

Moderation, compassion, and careful thought

For the planet we recklessly destroy.

A parasite feeds without regard for tomorrow,

Gnawing its host until it dies.

So what does that make us?

It seems we must protect our home…

From ourselves.
